Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN), Pupuk Indonesia and ACWA Power have announced it will build an integrated green hydrogen and ammonia project in Indonesia.

The three companies signed a Joint Development Study Agreement (JDSA) at the ASEAN Indo Pacific Forum (AIPF), with the collaboration expected to produce more than 30,000 tonnes of hydrogen and receive an investment of up to $1.35bn.

The project will be located in East Java and develop downstream green ammonia energy and green hydrogen to be utilised in the fertiliser industry.

Set to enter the development stage in 2025 – 2026, it’s anticipated to begin operations in 2027. PLN believes that the facility will accelerate the energy transition and reach Indonesia’s Net Zero targets by 2060.

Darmawan Prasodjo, PLN’s President Director, said, “Through this forum, PLN, ACWA and Pupuk Indonesia will finalise detailed project development plans. This collaboration will not only develop the energy business ecosystem, but also boost the national economy.”

The JDSA was signed at the 43rd ASEAN Summit, the AIPF, which took place September 5 – 6, 2023.

In April (2023), Pupuk Indonesia’s Marketing Director, Ir Gusrizal, said that he hopes the Indonesian Government provides incentives to develop clean ammonia to complement the country’s energy transition programme and targets for Net Zero.
